Total online sales growth in the UK rose by 36.6% in 2020 – the largest growth in 13 years – as necessity and convenience drive shoppers online in record numbers.
Local and national lockdowns at the end of the year boosted those months higher than average with November at +39% the year’s biggest riser.
Almost all categories saw large increases on 2019 with garden ( +222% ) and electricals ( +91% ) leading the way as restrictions to hospitality and leisure kept people at home. The at home message resulted in online sales of clothing lagging the market, up just 1.3% in 2020 compared to 8.2% growth the year before.
